As the capital city of Thailand, Bangkok is a major metropolitan area that is home to many people. Just like any other city, Bangkok can have its share of traffic problems, especially at certain times of the day. Fortunately, there is a large variety of public transportation which visitors can take advantage of.
Bangkok has two different rail services and a complete network of public busses. These should be all you need to get where you’re going but you may be interested in a few forms of transportation which are unique to this city.
Some visitors may be familiar with ferry boats to a certain extent. What many people are surprised to find out, however, is that there are a number of different boats available for hire. It’s possible to find a modern boat that you can charter to visit some of the surrounding areas but this may not be a truly unique experience. Bangkok is home to more than a few floating markets and many travellers have found that small private river boats are the most convenient way to maneuver through these markets.
Most modern cities will have taxis of one form or another. Most westerners will think of cars, or even vans, when they think of taxis but Bangkok has a slightly more adventurous option. If you spend any amount of time in the city of Bangkok then you are likely to see a large number of motorcycle taxis. While these can be a quick and exciting way to get around, they can also be a little dangerous and you might want to bring your own helmet.
The Tuk Tuk
The tuk tuk is a method of transportation that is very much a part of Bangkok’s own culture. These are three wheeled motorized vehicles that will usually have a roof but will be somewhat open and don’t have doors or windows. These are ubiquitous throughout Bangkok and anyone visiting the city should make sure to take a ride in one. When hiring a tuk tuk, it’s a good idea to settle on a price for the trip before getting in. Depending on where you pick one up, there may be a number of drivers competing for your business so you shouldn’t have trouble finding a good price.
Bangkok is a modern city complete with all of the public transportation any traveller could need. It’s possible to get to all of the major locations and landmarks with a variety of public transportation. While the busses and trains are fast and convenient, some people will be interested in transportation that is uniquely Thai. From river boats that become part of a floating market to motorcycle taxis that zip through traffic and ornate three wheeled tuk tuks, travellers can take their pick from a large number of different transportation options.
